Joomla SEO Part 2 - Search Engine Friendly URL's and the use of title alias

This is part 2 of our Joomla SEO guide. Today we will be looking at search friendly URL's also known as SEF URL's. SEF URL's is a positive "sideeffect" but worth a few words about.

By installing a component like sh404SEF you also get friendly URL's and although they don't provide much SEO value, they do create a usability value for your visitors, and you get links in Google SERP's that look a lot better. This could have a positive effect on the "click through rate" to your website. Another bennefit if you use 3. party statistics like Google Analytics is, you'll be able to identify your pages easily.

Without SEF URL's you'll have URL's like: index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3&Itemid=15
With SEF URL's you get URL's like: name-of-your-content.html

The title alias

in sh404SEF you have the option to use your content item's title alias as base for your url, and this is recommended as you'll be able to write better and more precise url's.

E.g. you have made a content item with the title: How to create a successful money making website. If you use your title as base for your URL's you'll get a URL like: how-to-create-a-successful-money-making-website.html

Instead use you title alias to create a shorter and more precise url with your keywords like: "create money making website" and you'll a much shorter URL like: create-money-making-website.html
